Our parent of the month is Jamie Canavero, also known as “Garrett’s Dad”.
Jamie was born, sometime way back, in Euphrada, Washington. There were four children in Jamie’s family and he was the second from the oldest, (many of us know his older sister, Vicki Field). Legend has it that Jamie resembled “The Beaver” from The Leave it to Beaver show when he was a little boy.
Jamie’s family moved around a bit and then they settled in Foster City California. Jamie attended San Mateo High School where he listened to AC/DC and Styx, (For you young ones, those were cool rock and roll bands of the time), while driving around in his yellow Nissan Pickup.
Jamie’s first job was a Dishwasher at the Coyote Point Yacht Club. And it was there that Jamie developed an interest in cooking. He attended cooking classes at community college and worked in different restaurants as a Chef. He really enjoys cooking. And in fact, he now cooks about 80 percent of the meals in the Canavero household. We’re told his food is inventive and very delicious. (Ladies, he also cleans and does laundry – Dreamy!!).
Many of us may not know that Jamie played on a professional Paintball team called – “The Iron Men”. His skills as a marksman are remarkable! He wore a camouflage outfit and his team traveled around the world to compete. He said his least favorite country was England – the food was atrocious – especially the hamburgers!
Jamie was set up with his future wife, Helyce, on a date back in 1992. Jamie said that she fell in love at first site. Helyce thought he was funny. Jamie continued to be a professional Paintball player as well as own and operate his automotive interior restoration business called “Field’s Choice”. He somehow convinced Helyce to marry him and they have their 2 wonderful children, Garrett and Corinne.
Helyce considers herself lucky to have such a great husband. “He’s a great dad and we have a 50/50 partnership raising the children. He’s sweet, funny and has a great sense of humor”.
Jamie is passionate about his fishing hobby. He has a salt water fishing boat and once, he caught a huge albacore tuna as well as other fish. He’ll often leave home around 4 in the morning and return mid afternoon. He’ll occasionally take the family on his trips. He loves the serenity of his surroundings when he’s fishing. And he finds this sport very therapeutic.
Jamie never played soccer as a youth, just Little League baseball. He loves American Football, (SF 49ers) and Baseball (SF Giants). His favorite Soccer team was the Earthquakes.
Both Jamie’s children play soccer, and he enjoys watching the children play and improve their soccer skills. You’ll often find Jamie at practice, helping the coaches and players with anything that needs to be done. Thanks Jamie!!
Jamie’s daughter Corinne, a first grader, also praises her father. “He lets me go to work with him and also gets me Slurpees for no particular reason. He’s the best Dad ever”!
Garrett is also proud of his father. “ If my Dad were to play soccer, he’d be a good defender – He’s good at sports, but horrible at video games”!
Thank you Jamie for all your support of our boy’s soccer team and for being our First “Parent of the Month”.
